The Crème de la Crème

An event we [CMA] look forward to every year (and that we sponsor) is Canada’s Next Top Ad Exec. It’s the brainchild of Mandeep Malik at McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business – a national, marketing/advertising case competition that brings together young, driven, and VERY smart business focused students vying for the title. The competition culminates on March 26th, with a closing ceremonies’ dinner, where the top winners are announced.

What is so great about this competition is its relevance - as marketing and advertising become more complex in our fragmented, digital environment, so too is the nature of the case competition – e.g., students MUST apply market research and analytics when developing strategy if they stand a chance of winning the top spot. Understanding data and applying insights is a point of entry today.

So it’s not surprising that aspiring marketing/advertising executives look to this program to fine-tune their skills, to give them a leg-up opportunity – in fact, 1,247 students registered in this year’s competition. Actual submissions numbered 114, from 30 schools across Canada. It’s been a grueling process, from submitting an elevator pitch that eliminated all but the top 30, to their submission of a strategy document after which a ‘top 10’ was left standing. These ten (in most instances, teams of two) – now battle it out during 30 minute presentations in front of a distinguished panel of industry adjudicators for coveted prizes:

  • Winning team gets the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Cruze [one for each on team]
  • Two $2,500 scholarships and two $1,000 scholarships from Chevrolet Canada
  • A Microsoft Prize Pack including, an XBox 360 with Kinect, Halo 4 and w Win8 Phone
  • Internship opportunities (GM, PepsiCo and Canada Tire), and more....

Good talent is hard to come by. The good news is the evening of March 26th, you can get a head start connecting with a pool of fresh, emerging talent at the closing ceremonies - albeit for a summer stint, internship at some point, or full-time position upon graduation. Keynoting the dinner presentation is Microsoft Advertising’s Natasha Hritzuk – Global Director of Insights and Analytics.
